چکیده

This paper addresses alternative procedures to the ESO supplied pipeline procedures for the reduction of UVES spectra of two quasar spectra to determine the value of the fundamental constant μ = Mp/Me at early times in the universe. The procedures utilize intermediate product images and spectra produced by the pipeline with alternative wavelength calibration and spectrum addition methods. Spectroscopic studies that require extreme wavelength precision need customized wavelength calibration procedures beyond that usually supplied by the standard data reduction pipelines. An example of such studies is the measurement of the values of the fundamental constants at early times in the universe. This article describes a wavelength calibration procedure for the UV-Visual Echelle Spectrometer on the Very Large Telescope, however, it can be extended to other spectrometers as well. The procedure described here provides relative wavelength precision of better ⋆ Based on observations made with ESO Telescopes at the La Silla or Paranal Observatories under program IDs 68.A-0106 and 70.A-0017 Preprint submitted to Elsevier 5 December 2008 than 3×10 for the long-slit Thorium-Argon calibration lamp exposures. The gain in precision over the pipeline wavelength calibration is almost entirely due to a more exclusive selection of Th/Ar calibration lines.

Selection of ThAr lines for wavelength calibration of echelle spectra and implications for variations in the fine-structure constant

Echelle spectrographs currently provide some of the most precise and detailed spectra in astronomy, the interpretation of which sometimes depends on the wavelength calibration accuracy. In some applications, such as constraining cosmological variations in the fundamental constants from quasar absorption lines, the wavelength calibration is crucial. Here we detail an algorithm for selecting thor...

We report Doppler measurements of α Cen A from time-series spec-troscopy made with UCLES at the 3.9-m AAT. Wavelength calibration using an iodine absorption cell produced high-precision velocity measurements, whose power spectrum shows the clear signature of solar-like oscillations, confirming the detection reported by Bouchy & Carrier (2001). 1. The Gaia-ESO Survey: processing of the FLAMES-UVES spectra

The Gaia-ESO Survey is a large public spectroscopic survey that aims to derive radial velocities and fundamental parameters of about 105 Milky Way stars in the field and in clusters. Observations are carried out with the multi-object optical spectrograph FLAMES, using simultaneously the medium resolution (R∼20,000) GIRAFFE spectrograph and the high resolution (R∼47,000) UVES spectrograph. Wavelength interval selection in multicomponent spectral analysis by moving window partial least-squares regression with applications to mid-infrared and near-infrared spectroscopic data.

A new wavelength interval selection procedure, moving window partial least-squares regression (MWPLSR), is proposed for multicomponent spectral analysis. This procedure builds a series of PLS models in a window that moves over the whole spectral region and then locates useful spectral intervals in terms of the least complexity of PLS models reaching a desired error level. Based on a proposed th...

New constraint on cosmological variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio from Q0528−250

Molecular hydrogen transitions in quasar spectra can be used to constrain variation in the proton-to-electron mass ratio, μ ≡ mp/me, at high redshifts (z 2). We present here an analysis of a new spectrum of the quasar Q0528−250, obtained on Very Large Telescope (VLT)/Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES), and analyse the well-known H2 absorber at z = 2.811 in this spectrum. For the...
